so i listened to france the mute about 20 times over the weekend. and now i think i finally understand it. there are instrumental parts on purpose becuase the mars volta doesnt like to spell everything out loud and clear. you have to have an idea about the story, then listen to the lyrics and the noises and various sound samples and then meaning can be drawn from the enigma of musical and lyrical genius.

the story goes as follows:

a mexican boy who never knew his father, and his mother was a whore. she was killed when he was old enough to react, so its basicly the search to find and avenge his mother's killer. which he eventually does...... the song frances the mute which is not even on the album....... what a song....... you fill in the blanks.

the titles suggest things to like cassandra geminni... i am not exactly sure what it means but..... its sounds kinda like a quest which is where the tale end of the album leads you right back to where you started..... " the ocean floor is hidden the viewing land a depth perception languished in the nigh." ( from cygnus vismund cygnus and the last part of cassandra geminni). this album is very much like a musical journey, very much fitting for the mars volta themselves. at the time they where going through personal grief by the death of a close friend by the name of Jermey Ward. RIP. (sigh) he was the sound manipulator for defacto and the mars volta, he helped on all of the tremulant e.p. and several jermeyesk noise fits can be found through out the album deloused in the comatorum. he was found dead in his apartment and it was detirmined to be a heroine overdose. so in tribute the mars volta made the album frances the mute about a journal that jermey found wile working as a repo man. the journal was about the search of an adopted kid to find his parents. and jermey finished it. " it was really a jermey thing to do"(cedric baxtar zivila).

great album, i cant say that i can find any weak points. i like all of it including the slow sections. definitly on my list of perfect albums
